Microsoft will include the new Office 2013 (Word, Excel, Power Point and OneNote) for free with each tablet or hybrid device that is running Windows RT, to sweeten up the pot for those who are hesitant that those slates can’t run legacy programs written for Intel’s x86 platform.
It’s surprising to see Microsoft give away its flagship software with Windows RT tablets (those are the ones meant to compete with the iPad) when they could have used it as an opportunity to get people to fork over $50-100 while getting used to paying for apps on Windows Marketplace.
We still don’t have a price for any Windows RT tablets, including Microsoft’s Surface, making the strategy behind this decision unclear. This could be a sign that Microsoft knows they won’t be able to match the iPad on price, and are trying to increase the value of their tablets by filling them with free software.
